Sigma Honor Society

Omicron Upsilon, the University of Portland School of Nursing & Health Innovations' chapter of Sigma Honor Society, accepts seniors and graduate students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement in nursing. Awarding membership encourages, fosters, and actively supports further professional development, thus promoting nursing scholarship, leadership, creativity, and commitment to nursing. Each year, those nurses who have shown through their practice that they uphold the values and ideals of Sigma are inducted as community nurse leaders.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty

About the Award

The DAISY Foundation is an an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. The DAISY Foundation was formed in November 1999, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The nursing care Patrick received when hospitalized profoundly touched his family.

Starting in 2022, Omicron Upsilon has facilitated the nomination and awarding of an annual DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty to one or more SONHI faculty members. According to The DAISY Foundation, this award honors nursing faculty who "inspire their students to always remember that nursing is much more than tasks and technology" and who "help ensure that the art as well as the science of nursing are brought to every patient experience."
