Introduction to Senior Synthesis

NRS 408: Transition to Professional Practice is completed in the final semester of nursing school and provides each student with the opportunity to demonstrate professional RN practice at the novice level. This 180-hour clinical rotation is a senior practicum experience with a nurse preceptor where the student will synthesize and apply nursing knowledge, skills, and abilities. The 180-hours is divided into 3 components that includes 96 hours of Direct Patient Care, 72 hours of Simulation, and 12 hours of Focused Learning Activities. Students will learn new nursing techniques and skills while experiencing what nursing will be like as a new baccalaureate-prepared graduate nurse without clinical faculty being present every day.
At the beginning of fourth semester a synthesis information meeting will be scheduled for the cohort. After this meeting students will be instructed to complete an opt-out survey. However, if questions remain after attending the Senior Synthesis meeting and reading through the FAQs, students should contact Devin Apland at Apland@up.edu or Lisa Le-Vaughan at Lel@up.edu. Questions regarding compliance and onboarding should be directed to Amyl Freeberg at Freeberg@up.edu.

Attention Providence Scholars: Chelsey Dyer will handle all aspects of Providence Scholars Synthesis placements. Providence Scholars are placed by Providence and will complete a different survey than non-Providence Scholars. Any questions should be directed to Chelsey at chelsey.dyer@providence.org

The primary goal is to place students in settings where they will continue to develop and apply the RN knowledge and skills that have been gained in school. All clinical settings will provide a robust synthesis experience and allow students to meet program outcomes.

Students will be working whatever shifts their preceptors work: days, evenings, or nights, as well as weekends. In addition, students are required to attend all nursing classes during this clinical experience; classes may not be missed to go to clinical. Students are asked to free up as much time as possible for their practicum experience. This means clearing their calendars of outside work needs, family obligations, and travel plans. This practicum experience is their work during this time, so all students are expected to make it a priority.
