School of Nursing: Learning Resource Center
The acute care lab is used by nursing students across the curriculum. The acute care lab consists of five simulation-capable patient care rooms, designed to function like a hospital unit so students are familiar with the environment, equipment, and supplies prior to entering clinical experiences in health care facilities. Each room has working oxygen, suction, bedside cardiac monitoring and the most modern equipment that would be found in a hospital in our partnering facilities. Students practice all aspects of professional nursing utilizing state-of-the art technology including human patient simulation manikins.
The outpatient clinical lab is used by nursing students across the curriculum. This lab has four rooms that replicate a fully functional clinic including radiograph viewboxes, suturing and casting supplies. In this lab, students practice complete physical exams, documentation via computers, and safe patient transfers.
The classroom is located between the acute care lab and outpatient clinic lab. The classroom is suitable for classes with up to 20 students. This area provides a small didactic teaching area and closed-circuit viewing with group reflection of clinical learning simulations.
The dedicated simulation theatre replicates an acute care patient room. Clinical simulations provide students with opportunities to practice nursing care through realistic clinical scenarios that are essential to achieving program and course outcomes. Students learn to work both individually and in teams while providing patient care utilizing human patient simulators and realistic healthcare equipment. The simulation theatre includes a control room and two closed-curcuit viewing rooms where faculty and peers view and reflect upon clinical learning that occurs during simulation.
What sets our LRC apart from others schools of nursing is the similarity of our environment to that of actual health care facilities. This allows our students to transfer their learning from the academic lab setting to the bedside with increased skill and confidence.LRC Guidelines
